United Arab Emirates closes beaches due to major oil spill FAST-MOVING

Authorities in the United Arab Emirates have closed multiple beaches across the northern emirates following a significant offshore oil spill. The closures affect Umm Al Quwain, where all coastal areas are temporarily shut, Sharjah, specifically Al Hamriyah Beach, and Ras Al Khaimah, where all beaches are closed until further notice.

The spill is reportedly linked to the tanker ‘Gem No. 2’, a 330-meter vessel flying the Panamanian flag and owned by a Taiwanese company. Researchers suggest the leak resulted from an attack on the tanker approximately two weeks ago, potentially involving a naval mine or projectile during regional conflicts. The resulting oil slick is estimated to be approximately 90 kilometers long.

The Ministry of Climate Change and Environment (MOCCAE) has deployed teams for containment, cleanup, and remediation. While residents in Sharjah, Ajman, and Umm Al Quwain reported strong, fuel-like odors for several days, the ministry stated there are no immediate health risks to the population. Authorities have urged fishermen and sea users to avoid the affected waters to protect marine life and ensure safety.
