UK announces £600m AI security and biosecurity funding package
The United Kingdom has unveiled a comprehensive investment package of approximately £600 million ($800 million) aimed at securing the nation against artificial intelligence-related threats. A central component of this initiative is the establishment of the AI Biosecurity Lab (AIBL), described as the world’s first dedicated organization of its kind. The AIBL will receive £100 million in government funding to utilize frontier AI for the early detection of biological threats and the accelerated development of vaccines and medical countermeasures.
Private sector support will bolster the biosecurity initiative, with OpenAI and Anthropic pledging up to £200 million in combined model credits and technical resources. Other collaborators include Google DeepMind and Basecamp Research.
The broader funding package includes £120 million for the existing AI Security Institute to enhance its assessment of advanced AI models. To strengthen national cyber defenses, £130 million has been allocated to projects such as the National Cyber Shield and the National Exposure and Real-Time Vulnerability Centre.
Additional investments target economic and industrial resilience, including £60 million for a fund supporting British companies in robotics and autonomous systems, £60 million for AI research and procurement, and £23 million to study the economic impact of AI on the workforce.
