United Kingdom appoints first Cabinet Minister for Artificial Intelligence

The United Kingdom has appointed Kanishka Narayan as the Minister of State for Artificial Intelligence. Appointed by Prime Minister Andy Burnham, Narayan becomes the first individual to hold a formal Cabinet seat dedicated to AI. He will also chair the newly established Prime Minister’s AI Taskforce, led by Lord Vallance, which is tasked with driving economic growth and government-wide AI adoption.

As the UK pursues its goal of becoming an AI superpower, the rapid expansion of digital infrastructure is creating significant energy challenges. Estimates suggest that data centres could require an additional 6GW of electricity capacity by 2030. While there is debate regarding the necessity of increased gas-fired power generation to meet this demand, experts suggest that data centres should be integrated as active participants in the energy transition rather than remaining passive consumers of electricity.
