United Kingdom blames Houthi militia for Yemen escalation

The United Kingdom has held the Houthi militia fully responsible for the escalation of conflict in Yemen, condemning their ongoing attacks on Saudi Arabia and military operations that threaten regional stability and international maritime navigation.

During a UN Security Council session, UK Deputy Permanent Representative Kate Foster warned that the Houthi militia is attempting to consolidate control along the Yemeni Red Sea coast and near the Bab el-Mandeb Strait. She noted that such actions pose a direct threat to global shipping routes and the international economy. Foster reported that recent attacks in Saudi Arabia injured 13 civilians and caused damage to residential areas and commercial aviation.

The humanitarian situation is also worsening, with over 126,000 people displaced due to the escalation. Humanitarian organizations have raised alarms regarding food insecurity and health needs, particularly for women and children near Marib. The UK has called for the immediate and unconditional release of detained UN staff, relief workers, and diplomatic missions, while urging member states to enforce arms embargoes against the militia.
