United Kingdom considers cutting clean energy funds for military spending
The British government is considering reducing allocations for key clean energy programs to fund increased military spending. Officials are exploring ways to save approximately £2 billion ($2.6 billion) from the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero budget.
Proposed cuts include the ‘Warm Homes’ program, which has an estimated allocation of £15 billion, as well as carbon capture and storage initiatives and hydrogen production projects. While no final decisions have been made, these considerations come ahead of the government budget announcement scheduled for October 28.
All government departments are required to allocate 1 percent of their capital spending budgets to defense investments. Additionally, the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero has been asked to reduce its spending by an additional £2 billion by the end of the decade. Because many energy transition projects span several years, officials may opt to delay or reduce future spending rather than canceling projects entirely.
