United Kingdom deploys fighter jets to defend Saudi Arabia

The United Kingdom has announced the deployment of Royal Air Force Typhoon fighter jets to Saudi Arabia to assist in defending the kingdom against increasing missile and drone attacks from Yemen’s Houthi rebels. The British Ministry of Defence stated that the mission is strictly defensive, aimed at protecting critical national infrastructure and cities, and will not involve offensive strikes against Houthi positions in Yemen.

In addition to the Typhoon jets, the UK is deploying an A400M transport aircraft and military advisers to support Saudi operations. The deployment also includes an extension of air-to-air refueling support for Saudi air operations for an additional 90 days. These measures follow a period of intensified Houthi activity, including strikes targeting Riyadh’s King Khalid International Airport and strategic oil facilities like the Shaybah field.

France has also moved to deploy military assets to Saudi Arabia to protect the Red Sea port of Yanbu. Meanwhile, the United States has ordered the withdrawal of non-essential diplomatic personnel and their families from Saudi Arabia due to the escalating security environment and the threat of continued attacks on civilian and energy infrastructure.
