United Kingdom records hottest summer since 1884
The United Kingdom has provisionally recorded its hottest summer since records began in 1884. According to the Met Office, the average mean temperature for the June-August period reached 16.5°C, surpassing the previous record of 16.1°C set in 2025.
The season was characterized by five distinct heatwaves, extreme heat, and significant drought. These conditions led to destructive wildfires, water restrictions for millions, and transport disruptions. The UK recorded 40 days with temperatures of at least 30°C, breaking the previous record of 34 days. The highest temperature of the summer was 38.1°C, recorded at Kew Gardens on August 13.
Met Office scientists concluded that human-induced climate change made this record-breaking summer approximately 130 times more likely. Dr. Amy Doherty noted that climate records are being broken with increasing frequency. The UK Health Security Agency estimated that approximately 2,877 deaths in England were associated with the heatwaves during May and June.
