United Kingdom food security faces risks from import reliance and climate shocks

The United Kingdom faces increasing risks of food scarcity due to its heavy reliance on imports, which account for approximately 48% of its food supply. Current logistics models used by supermarkets and distributors rely heavily on “just-in-time” delivery, leaving the nation with little capacity to absorb significant supply chain disruptions.

Environmental factors, including regular droughts and extreme weather, are compromising domestic production. A heatwave in Europe during June resulted in an estimated loss of over €2.1 billion in grain crop value. In the UK, summer heatwaves and declining reservoir levels, such as those noted by Yorkshire Water, have intensified pressure on domestic crops.

According to a recent supply chain resilience report by the consultancy SCALA, only 33% of businesses have implemented strategies to mitigate these types of shocks. Experts suggest that food scarcity should be treated as a matter of immediate national security to combat the combined threats of geopolitical disruption, shipping lane closures, and extreme weather.
