UK announces new Russia sanctions and £54m aid package for Ukraine

During a visit to Ukraine, UK Foreign Secretary Ed Miliband announced a new package of sanctions against Russia and significant financial aid for Ukraine. The sanctions target 38 new entities and individuals, including two Russian oil companies, Zarubezhneft and INK Capital, which brings the total UK coverage of Russian oil production capacity to over 90 percent. Additionally, the UK sanctioned 12 more vessels from Russia's shadow fleet and targeted three crypto exchanges and two payment platforms suspected of aiding sanction evasion.

To support Ukraine, the UK pledged a 54 million pound aid package focused on energy infrastructure and humanitarian needs, including funds for emergency repairs to the power grid and the installation of generators and solar panels. A separate 6.3 million pound allocation was designated to assist in the pursuit and prosecution of Russian war crimes.

Miliband and President Volodymyr Zelensky visited Pryluky in the Chernihiv region, the site of a recent Russian missile strike on a residential building that killed 22 civilians, including five children. Miliband condemned the attack, describing it as evidence of Putin's strategy to terrorize civilians.
