United Kingdom invests nearly $40 million in SpaceX satellite services

The United Kingdom has invested nearly £30 million (approximately $40 million) in SpaceX satellite services, marking the first time a nation outside the United States has publicly confirmed the use of Starshield. Starshield is a specialized network designed by SpaceX for military and intelligence operations, offering advanced encryption, network priority, and specialized hardware that distinguishes it from the consumer-focused Starlink service.

According to the UK Ministry of Defence, the military currently utilizes approximately 1,000 Starshield terminals and 500 Starlink terminals. While Starlink has been used by military forces since the 2022 invasion of Ukraine, the shift toward Starshield reflects a move toward high-security, military-grade connectivity. The costs for Starshield services are significantly higher than commercial alternatives, with monthly subscriptions ranging from £5,500 for limited data to £25,000 for unlimited access.

This increased reliance on Elon Musk’s SpaceX comes as European governments seek to bolster their own defense capabilities amid growing concerns regarding the long-term reliability of American security guarantees.
