UK space sector investment and strategy

The United Kingdom has launched a national space strategy backed by £7.8 billion in investment through 2030, aiming to integrate defense, science, and industry to drive economic growth and national security.

Building on previous investments in satellite communications, the strategy allocates £2.8 billion to support programs such as Skynet and Connectivity in Low Earth Orbit. These initiatives are intended to improve military communications and civilian services, including mobile signals on trains and rural internet access.

To bolster national security and Space Domain Awareness, the government has earmarked £880 million for space control, intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance to monitor military activity and defend against satellite attacks. Specific investments include £149 million for the European Space Agency’s Vigil mission and £85 million for the National Space Operations Centre to track orbital debris and potential hostile activity. Infrastructure development continues with £30 million allocated to the SaxaVord Spaceport in Shetland to strengthen domestic launch capabilities. Business and Defence Secretaries Jonathan Reynolds and Wes Streeting stated the strategy is designed to help UK industry “seize opportunities in an increasingly competitive space frontier while ensuring the protection of allied space assets.”

In a significant development for military connectivity, the UK has invested nearly £30 million in SpaceX satellite services. This marks the first time a nation outside the United States has publicly confirmed the use of Starshield, a specialized network designed for military and intelligence operations featuring advanced encryption and network priority. The UK Ministry of Defence reports that the military currently utilizes approximately 1,000 Starshield terminals alongside 500 Starlink terminals, signaling a shift toward high-security, military-grade connectivity.
