United Kingdom issues warning over spider infestation risk

Authorities in the United Kingdom have issued a warning to homeowners to keep windows tightly closed, particularly after 7:00 PM, due to an increasing risk of spider infestations. As temperatures cool following recent heatwaves, male house spiders and the growing population of the noble false widow spider (Steatoda nobilis) are seeking warm indoor shelters.

While not typically fatal, bites from the noble false widow can cause intense pain, localized swelling, and in some instances, high fever, with symptoms comparable to a wasp sting. Window expert Alan Reid noted that homes face a significant invasion risk starting at dusk.

Experts recommend sealing gaps in doors and windows with filler material and using essential oils like peppermint, tea tree, or lavender as deterrents. In the event of a bite, it is advised to apply a cold compress and seek medical attention if symptoms worsen.
