United Kingdom Releases Updated Travel Item Bans and Kenya Security Advisory

The United Kingdom has published an updated list of items that travelers may not bring into the country from 2026. The guidance expands prohibited goods to include controlled drugs, offensive weapons such as flick knives, self‑defence sprays, endangered animal and plant species, rough diamonds, and indecent or obscene material. It also restricts personal imports of meat and dairy from most non‑EU countries, and requires licences for firearms, explosives and ammunition. Counterfeit and pirated media remain banned, and breaches can lead to seizure, prosecution or fines.

In a separate notice, the UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office issued a fresh travel advisory for Kenya, warning British nationals of heightened security risks near the Kenya‑Somalia border and in parts of Mandera, Wajir, Garissa and Lamu counties. The advisory cites threats from Al‑Shabaab‑linked terrorism, kidnapping, violent crime and possible disruptions from political protests ahead of the 2027 Kenyan general election. Travelers are urged to avoid non‑essential travel to high‑risk areas, remain vigilant, keep valuables secure, travel during daylight and steer clear of large gatherings.
