United Kingdom retail sales growth hits four-month low in August

Retail sales growth in the United Kingdom slowed to a four-month low in August, according to data from the British Retail Consortium (BRC). The annual growth rate dropped to 0.7 percent, down from 1.3 percent in July and significantly below the previous year's average.

While food sales saw some growth, non-food sales experienced a decline. Specifically, non-food sales fell 0.2 percent in August compared to the previous year. Analysts noted that while an uncharacteristic heatwave earlier in the summer may have pulled forward some spending, most categories could not sustain that momentum.

Economic pressures, including rising energy bills and increased operating costs for retailers, have contributed to more cautious consumer behavior. BRC CEO Helen Dickinson noted that retailers are facing a dual challenge of rising costs and slowing demand. Retailers are now shifting focus toward back-to-school preparations and the upcoming final quarter of the year.
