United Kingdom reviews security for politicians and Royal Family
UK Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood has announced an urgent review of security measures for public figures following an increase in threats, intimidation, and violence. Speaking to the House of Commons, Mahmood emphasized that while intense debate and criticism are essential to public service, they must not serve as a pretext for violence.
The decision follows the July murder of 78-year-old Anne Whitcomb, a prominent Reform UK figure and former Conservative minister, in southwest England. The primary suspect, Joshua Kerry, also faces charges related to planning terrorist attacks against Reform UK leader Nigel Farage.
The security review, overseen by the Home Office-led committee Ravec, will expand protection to include party leaders not in the House of Commons, members of the House of Lords, former MPs, and party representatives. The review also encompasses the Royal Family, specifically addressing the ongoing debate regarding police protection for Prince Harry and Meghan Markle following their return to the United Kingdom.
