United Kingdom seeks Chilean support on Falkland Islands sovereignty
British Prime Minister Andy Burnham held a telephone conversation with Chilean President José Antonio Kast to discuss the sovereignty of the Falkland Islands. During the call, Burnham emphasized the United Kingdom's position regarding the right to self-determination for the islands' inhabitants.
The discussion also focused on strengthening bilateral relations in defense, security, science, and commerce. Both leaders expressed a desire to modernize military capabilities and expand trade opportunities. This includes a potential technology transfer from Babcock International Group to Chilean shipyards (Asmar) for the construction of Arrowhead 140 frigates.
The diplomatic engagement occurs amid growing regional dynamics, including the establishment of a new commercial maritime route between Punta Arenas, Chile, and Puerto Argentino, scheduled for late 2024. This development follows recent cooperation between the British ambassador and local Chilean authorities regarding Antarctic infrastructure and naval cooperation.
