Sugar consumption linked to long-term cancer risks and neurological changes
Recent scientific research has highlighted the profound long-term impacts of sugar consumption on human health. A study utilizing data from the UK Biobank examined over 64,000 individuals born in Great Britain between 1951 and 1956. Researchers found that those who experienced sugar rationing during their first 1,000 days of life had a lower incidence of several cancers, including breast, prostate, liver, rectum, and lung cancers. These individuals also exhibited signs of slower biological aging, such as longer telomeres.
Further neurological research published in Nature Communications suggests that high-fat diets can disrupt the brain's ability to recognize sugar. In studies involving rodents, a high-fat diet impaired the hypothalamus, preventing the brain from mounting protective responses to glucose influx, which may contribute to the development of type 2 diabetes.
Medical experts emphasize that while sugar itself is not inherently problematic, excessive intake—particularly added sugars—exceeds recommended limits. The World Health Organization suggests that added sugar should constitute no more than ten percent of daily caloric intake, with a preference for keeping added sugar below 25 grams per day for an average adult.
