Ukraine receives military aid pledges from UK and Belgium

During high-level meetings in Brussels and London, leaders from the United Kingdom and Belgium pledged significant military support to Ukraine to bolster its air defenses and long-range strike capabilities.

UK Prime Minister Andy Burnham and President Volodymyr Zelensky agreed on a new shipment of long-range Storm Shadow cruise missiles. This delivery aims to enable Ukraine to strike military targets deep within Russian territory. Additionally, the UK pledged a £45 million anti-air missile battery package and announced the acceleration of Lightweight Multirole Missile (LMM) deliveries to intercept Russian jet-powered drones. To support broader air defense, the UK government also announced a £100 million contribution to the PURL mechanism for procuring Patriot missiles.

In Belgium, Prime Minister Bart De Wever confirmed that the country will deliver 10 F-16 fighter jets to Ukraine this year. While previous delays in F-35 deliveries had impacted the schedule, the arrival of new aircraft in Belgium will now facilitate the transfer of F-16s. The leaders also discussed providing additional ammunition for these jets, including options from the Belgian defense company FN Herstal. Zelensky emphasized that F-16s are critical for repelling Russian Shahed-type drones and protecting vital energy infrastructure.
