UK-Ukraine missile production and air defense cooperation
Overview
Ukraine is working toward long-range strike capabilities through international cooperation. British Deputy Defense Minister Louise Sandher-Jones noted that domestic production of Western Storm Shadow/SCALP cruise missiles remains difficult due to high complexity. To mitigate this, the UK and Ukraine are collaborating on the Brakestop project to develop a low-cost, long-range cruise missile. Additionally, the UK has allowed MBDA to transfer classified data regarding SCALP components to Ukraine, while France has reached agreements for the licensed production of various weapons, including SCALP missiles and Aster 30 missiles.
Following escalating Russian attacks on Ukrainian energy and civilian infrastructure, the United Kingdom has pledged to accelerate the delivery of military aid. This includes Storm Shadow missiles, which allow Ukrainian forces to strike targets up to 250 kilometers inside Russian territory, and Lightweight Multirole Missiles intended to intercept fast-moving drones. To address air defense shortages, the UK has committed £100 million to the PURL mechanism for the procurement of Patriot missiles and related equipment.
In recent high-level meetings, the United Kingdom and Belgium pledged further support. UK Prime Minister Andy Burnham and President Volodymyr Zelenskyy agreed on a new shipment of Storm Shadow missiles and a £45 million anti-air missile battery package. Meanwhile, Belgian Prime Minister Bart De Wever confirmed that Belgium will deliver 10 F-16 fighter jets to Ukraine this year. Discussions in Belgium also included providing additional ammunition for these jets, with President Zelenskyy emphasizing that F-16s are critical for protecting vital energy infrastructure and repelling Russian Shahed-type drones.
