United Kingdom to ban TPO in gel nail polishes

The United Kingdom is set to ban the use of Trimethylbenzoyl Diphenylphosphine Oxide (TPO) in gel nail polishes. The restriction follows the European Union's classification of the chemical as a reproductive toxin.

TPO is a compound used in cosmetic formulations to help gel polish cure under UV light, serving as a stabilizer and plasticizer. The ban is driven by concerns that the substance may act as an endocrine disruptor. Research involving high doses in animal studies has suggested potential links to fertility issues.

Nail technicians and retailers will be prohibited from purchasing products containing TPO starting February 14, 2027. The phased implementation allows businesses to exhaust existing supplies before the ban takes full effect. While the Cosmetic Toiletry & Perfumery Association noted that the ban is based on hazardous properties under worst-case exposure scenarios, the move is expected to force manufacturers to reformulate products to ensure safety for both consumers and salon professionals.
