United Kingdom to boost troop presence in Estonia to 1,200 soldiers

The United Kingdom and Estonia have signed an updated defence‑cooperation roadmap in Tallinn. Under the agreement the British force stationed on NATO’s eastern flank will be expanded from about 800 to roughly 1,200 personnel, with an additional 400 troops arriving next year.

The new formation will replace the current tank‑led battlegroup with a Mobile Anti‑Armour Force equipped with more mobile vehicles, advanced weapons and drones, and will be supported by pre‑positioned equipment and ammunition in Estonia. The roadmap also outlines deeper cooperation on deep‑strike capabilities, joint procurement and defence‑industry development, and commits a UK brigade to remain on high readiness for rapid reinforcement.

British troops have been present in Estonia since 2016 as part of NATO’s Baltic battlegroup. The upgrade reflects lessons from the war in Ukraine and aims to improve mobility, survivability and lethality to deter Russian aggression and strengthen NATO’s eastern flank.
