Manipur: Four Naga civilians killed in Kangpokpi ambush
Four Naga civilians were killed in an ambush on August 27 along the Imphal-Tamenglong (IT) Road in Manipur’s Kangpokpi district. The victims, members of the Liangmai Naga community, were traveling between Makui Ashang and Thanamba Naga villages when they were targeted by armed militants.
The United Naga Council (UNC) has accused Kuki militant groups, specifically the Kuki National Front (P), Kuki National Front (KNF), and Kuki National Army (KRA), of carrying out the attack. In response, the UNC called for a 12-hour ‘genna’ observation shutdown across Naga areas on August 28, which included the closure of shops, government offices, and vehicular movement.
The Global Naga Forum (GNF) has strongly criticized both the Central and State governments for failing to protect Naga civilians. The GNF also raised concerns regarding the Suspension of Operations (SoO) framework, alleging that armed cadres are misusing designated camps as staging points for attacks.
Survivors of the ambush reported that a large group of approximately 40 to 50 militants were lying in wait. Naga leaders have demanded the immediate arrest of those responsible and the formation of a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe the incident.
