United Nations adopts Vietnam-led International Decade of Culture initiative

The United Nations General Assembly has officially adopted a resolution proclaiming the ‘International Decade of Culture for Sustainable Development’ for the period 2027–2036. This initiative was spearheaded and co-sponsored by Vietnam, alongside a core group of nations including Cyprus, Italy, Laos, Qatar, and Saint Kitts and Nevis, garnering support from 103 co-sponsoring countries.

The resolution recognizes culture as a vital driver for human development, social cohesion, and sustainable economic growth. It emphasizes culture's role in creating livelihoods, fostering innovation, and providing solutions for cross-cutting issues such as education, health, gender equality, and environmental protection.

UNESCO will lead the implementation of the Decade, coordinating with member states to develop specific action plans and programs. Ambassador Do Hung Viet noted that the resolution elevates culture from being merely something to be preserved to being a recognized resource for global development and mutual understanding.
