UN International Decade of Culture initiative

Overview

The United Nations General Assembly officially adopted a resolution proclaiming the ‘International Decade of Culture for Sustainable Development’ for the period 2027–2036. Spearheaded by Vietnam and co-sponsored by a group of nations including Cyprus, Italy, Laos, Qatar, and Saint Kitts and Nevis, the initiative received support from 103 co-sponsoring countries. The resolution identifies culture as a driver for human development, social cohesion, and economic growth, with UNESCO tasked to lead the implementation.

This initiative follows a 50-year evolution in the partnership between Vietnam and UNESCO, during which Vietnam transitioned from an aid recipient to an active partner in global cultural and heritage initiatives. Vietnam has increasingly assumed leadership roles within UNESCO bodies, such as the Executive Board and the World Heritage Committee. To commemorate this milestone and the upcoming Decade, Vietnam hosted the Asia-Pacific Dialogue on Heritage and Authenticity in Hanoi and Ninh Binh, gathering approximately 250 experts to discuss heritage preservation.
