United Nations calls for AI governance to protect children's rights

The United Nations is calling for artificial intelligence governance that prioritizes the rights of children. Volker Türk, the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, emphasized that young people must be recognized as full rights-holders during the design and implementation of AI technologies.

A survey conducted by the High Commissioner’s office involving over 1,000 children across 49 countries highlighted several critical concerns. These include the proliferation of manipulated images, the exploitation of personal data, and fears that AI might replace essential human interactions with family, friends, and educators. Türk noted that children expressed a strong desire to be consulted before decisions affecting their lives are finalized.

UNICEF Director Catherine Russell added that while AI offers significant opportunities for learning and information access, the risks are substantial. UNICEF research revealed that at least 1.2 million children in 11 countries had their images transformed into sexually explicit content via AI within a single year. These efforts are part of the Coalition for Children’s Rights and Protection in the Age of AI, an initiative involving governments, tech companies, and civil society.
