United Nations calls for reset of peace operations and maritime security
United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres has called for a fundamental reset of UN peace operations and maritime security measures to address a rapidly changing global security landscape.
Guterres warned that the world is facing a resurgence of conflict between states and an intensification of internal wars, noting that the number of armed conflicts is at its highest level since 1945. He highlighted a significant rise in human costs, stating that battle-related deaths in the last five years have exceeded those of the previous 25 years combined. The Secretary-General noted that modern warfare is evolving with the increased use of drones and the emergence of autonomous lethal weapons.
To address these challenges, Guterres proposed prioritizing preventive diplomacy, peacemaking, and peaceful dispute resolution. He also emphasized the need for more flexible, cost-effective, and technologically capable peacekeeping missions.
In response to disruptions in the Red Sea, the Strait of Hormuz, and the Ukraine conflict, the UN is working to develop a time-bound trust-building mechanism to ensure the safe transport of essential goods, such as fertilizers and raw materials, through critical maritime routes.
