United Nations closes political mission in Somalia

The United Nations has officially closed its political mission in Somalia, ending more than three decades of continuous engagement aimed at rebuilding the nation following civil war. The United Nations Transitional Assistance Mission in Somalia (UNTMIS) ceased operations on October 31, 2026, following a two-year transition period requested by the Somali federal government.

Responsibilities previously held by UNTMIS, including governance, constitutional review, reconciliation, and electoral support, have been transferred to Somali state institutions, UN agencies, and the UN Support Office in Somalia (UNSOS). While the political mandate has concluded, the UN will maintain its presence through approximately 25 resident agencies, funds, and programmes to continue humanitarian, human rights, and development work.

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres commended Somalia’s progress and the resilience of its people, though he emphasized the need for sustained international support to address ongoing political, security, and humanitarian challenges. The mission’s departure occurs as the country faces internal political divisions and continued conflict with the Al-Qaeda-linked group Al-Shabab.
