United Nations hosts dialogue on global information integrity crisis

During the 81st session of the UN General Assembly in New York, the Information Integrity Solutions Dialogue was held to address a growing global information crisis. Co-hosted by Brazil, the UN Secretariat, UNDP, and UNESCO, the event gathered policymakers and practitioners to discuss the implementation of the UN Global Principles for Information Integrity and the Global Digital Compact.

Participants warned that the rapid evolution of the information ecosystem, particularly through the use of unregulated artificial intelligence and emerging technologies, is increasing systemic risks. Melissa Fleming, UN Under-Secretary-General for Global Communications, noted that a small number of companies currently dominate the global information architecture, often prioritizing engagement and profit over the public interest.

Discussions also highlighted the need to support information defenders, such as journalists and scientists, who face funding shortages and attacks. The dialogue emphasized turning shared principles into practical national and regional solutions, with a specific focus on climate information integrity and centering the Global South in these efforts.
