UNIDIR launches international forum on military AI

The United Nations Institute for Disarmament Research (UNIDIR) is launching a new initiative to address the military applications of artificial intelligence. The program includes the establishment of a permanent international forum designed to bring together governments, technology and defense companies, researchers, and civil society organizations.

Robin Geiss, Director of UNIDIR, warned that AI is increasingly integrated into critical military functions such as early warning systems, reconnaissance, target identification, and drone operations. Geiss noted that the speed of these technologies is narrowing the margin for human judgment, which poses significant risks in high-stakes scenarios, including the nuclear domain.

The initiative operates under the Center of Excellence on AI, Peace and Security, which was established in the summer of 2026. The forum aims to transform international discussions into practical proposals, promote common criteria for responsible development, and develop industry guidelines. While the initiative does not create legally binding obligations, it seeks to establish a structured space for debate within the UN system to address concerns regarding unintended escalation and the potential use of AI by non-state actors.
