United Nations meeting addresses education crisis for 500 million children

At a United Nations meeting, leaders and advocates highlighted a global education crisis affecting over 500 million children. The crisis is driven largely by conflict and climate-induced challenges.

Maysa Jalbout, Director of ‘Education Cannot Wait’, shared accounts from Sudan, describing classrooms reaching 44 degrees Celsius without water or electricity. She noted that despite extreme conditions and displacement, many children remain determined to learn, though overcrowded facilities prevent hundreds from attending.

Gordon Brown, the UN Special Envoy for Global Education, reported that 273 million children are currently out of school. Additionally, 270 million children enrolled in school are failing to meet essential literacy and numeracy benchmarks by age eleven. Brown urged governments to honor pledges to allocate 20% of their budgets to education and called on donor nations to increase financial commitments to address these gaps.
