United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres has called for urgent global coordination to manage the rapid development of artificial intelligence. He warned that an unconstrained AI arms race between superpowers could lead to a global catastrophe and urged the United States, China, and Europe to engage in serious safety dialogues. Guterres compared the necessity of these discussions to the diplomatic efforts following the Cuban Missile Crisis.

While the UN has utilized an advisory body of 39 members since 2023 to work on governance frameworks, political friction remains. US President Donald Trump has downplayed AI risks, asserting that existing US regulations are sufficient. Conversely, the resignation of Anthropic researcher Jacob Coxson in protest of the current pace of development has heightened concerns among some tech industry leaders regarding existential risks.

In a separate but related context, the UN is also addressing the slow progress of the Sustainable Development Goals, noting that fewer than 18% are currently on track for 2030.
