United Nations strengthens presence in Senegal and Burkina Faso

In Senegal, Minister of Foreign Affairs Cheikh Niang visited the Maison des Nations Unies (MONUD) in Diamniadio on September 4, 2026. The site is designated to become the new headquarters for various United Nations entities in the country. This move follows an agreement signed on June 12, 2026, between the Senegalese government and the UN regarding the occupation of the premises. The goal is a progressive relocation to strengthen strategic partnership and multilateral cooperation.

In Burkina Faso, the new United Nations Resident Coordinator, Njoya Tikum, met with the President of the Legislative Assembly, Ousmane Bougouma, in Ouagadougou on September 3, 2026. Tikum expressed the UN's commitment to supporting national priorities and coordinating assistance. During the meeting, Bougouma emphasized the importance of respecting Burkina Faso's sovereignty and ensuring the UN remains close to the people through the legislative assembly.
