United Nations supports Adré border opening and provides $9 million for Chad
The United Nations has welcomed the decision by the Sudanese government to extend the opening of the Adré border crossing between Chad and Sudan. This crucial corridor, described by Tom Fletcher, UN Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs, as a “vital and indispensable artery,” will remain open for an additional three months, through December 31, 2026. The passage is essential for delivering food, water, and medical assistance to populations affected by the conflict in the Darfur region.
In a related development, the UN Central Emergency Response Fund (CERF) has allocated $9 million in emergency funding to Chad. This is part of a larger $160 million global allocation by the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) to support underfunded crises. The funding aims to address the humanitarian needs in Chad, which are being intensified by the influx of refugees fleeing the war in Sudan, internal population displacements, and food insecurity.
