Somalia approves $1.26 billion budget as UN political mission ends
The Somali Council of Ministers has approved a $1.26 billion national budget for 2027. This proposed spending plan represents a 9.2 percent reduction from the previous year's original budget. The draft proposal must now undergo parliamentary approval, with a deadline set for December 31.
Simultaneously, the United Nations Transitional Assistance Mission in Somalia (UNTMIS) is set to cease operations on October 31, 2026. The closure follows a request from the Somali government and marks the end of over three decades of UN political presence in the country. While the political mission is concluding, the UN emphasized that its agencies and funds will continue to support Somalia, and the African Union's security mission will remain active.
Security transitions are also underway as African Union forces prepare to withdraw from three key positions in the southern Lower Shabelle region. Responsibility for these locations is expected to be handed over to the Somali National Army in early November. This move is part of a broader strategy to gradually transfer security responsibilities to national institutions while addressing ongoing threats from Al-Shabaab.
