United Nations warns of escalating humanitarian crisis in Yemen
The United Nations has issued warnings regarding the escalating humanitarian consequences of fighting in Yemen. Amidst the conflict, the UN announced the release of a World Food Programme employee who had been detained by Houthi forces.
Despite this release, UN spokesperson Farhan Haq stated that Secretary-General Antonio Guterres continues to call for the immediate and safe release of all UN and international organization staff currently held in Yemen. This includes 72 UN employees and five former staff members who remain in detention.
The humanitarian toll has risen sharply, with the UN Human Rights Office reporting at least 46 civilian deaths, including 24 children, and over 130 injuries since the beginning of August. Damage to civilian infrastructure has been documented, affecting homes, farms, health facilities, water networks, and educational institutions.
Additionally, the International Organization for Migration reported that more than 180,000 people have been displaced due to the ongoing hostilities.
