United Nations warns of escalating violence and massive casualties in Sudan

United Nations officials have issued grave warnings regarding the escalating conflict in Sudan, noting that the true death toll could reach hundreds of thousands due to limited access to combat zones. Rosemary DiCarlo, UN Under-Secretary-General for Political and Peacebuilding Affairs, reported that approximately 1,400 civilians were documented killed between January and June this year, with a significant increase in drone attacks targeting markets, schools, and water facilities.

The humanitarian situation is critical, with an estimated 13 million people displaced, including 8.7 million internally. Two-thirds of the Sudanese population requires urgent assistance to survive amid severe shortages of food, water, and medicine. Conflict is intensifying in North Kordofan and near the borders with Ethiopia and Chad, raising fears of regional instability.

On the political front, Sudanese Sovereignty Council President Abdel Fattah al-Burhan has indicated support for a national mechanism to facilitate an independent, inclusive dialogue involving various political and social forces. The UN continues to support mediation efforts involving the Quartet (Egypt, Saudi Arabia, the United States, and the United Arab Emirates) alongside the African Union and the Arab League to establish a sustainable political path and humanitarian truce.
