United Nations warns of record-breaking El Niño phenomenon

The United Nations has warned of a record-breaking El Niño phenomenon that is “super-sizing” before the world’s eyes. Scientific projections suggest this event could be the largest in at least 1,000 years, potentially making 2027 the hottest year ever recorded by adding extreme heat to an atmosphere already warming due to global warming.

The phenomenon is characterized by changes in Pacific winds that raise ocean temperatures, transferring massive amounts of heat to the atmosphere. Recent data shows ocean temperatures in the heart of El Niño are 2.6°C above the 30-year average.

Global consequences are already emerging, including fires in Indonesia, weakened monsoon rains in India, increased fire risks in Australia, and intense flooding in South America. The World Food Programme previously estimated that the current El Niño could push approximately 50 million people toward acute hunger. The UN emphasized that the race is now between increasing risks and the commitment to climate action.
