US supports Japan sovereignty after Putin's Kuril Islands visit
Russian President Vladimir Putin's visit to the disputed Kuril Islands has triggered a diplomatic crisis between Russia and Japan. During his trip, Putin visited an algae processing plant on Iturup Island, an area claimed by Japan as part of its Northern Territories.
In response, the United States has reaffirmed its unwavering support for Japan. US Ambassador to Tokyo George Glas stated that Washington recognizes Japanese sovereignty over the islands and opposes any actions that threaten stability in the Indo-Pacific region.
The Japanese government has lodged a formal protest by summoning Russian Ambassador Nikolai Nosdrev. Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi described the visit as unacceptable, asserting that the territories are an inseparable part of Japan under international law. Tokyo is currently considering retaliatory measures, including potential new sanctions against Moscow.
Russia has rejected these criticisms. Spokesperson Maria Zakharova dismissed Japan's claims as baseless and accused Tokyo of pursuing an anti-Russian policy. The territorial dispute dates back to 1945, when the islands were seized by the Soviet Union following the end of World War II.
