US and Japan agree to joint missile production facility in Japan

The United States and Japan have agreed to establish a joint facility in Japan for the final assembly, testing, and inspection of AIM-120 AMRAAM advanced medium-range air-to-air missiles. Announced by Japanese Defense Minister Shinjiro Koizumi and US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth in Cebu, Philippines, the initiative is titled ‘Operation Supercharge’. The missiles are described as essential for the F-35 fighter jets used by both nations.

The agreement follows discussions between the US, Japan, Australia, and the Philippines regarding expanded defense cooperation and potential joint investment in military infrastructure in the Philippines, specifically in Luzon and Mindanao. Australian Deputy Prime Minister Richard Marles confirmed that the four nations discussed increasing military cooperation through future exercises, including the expected participation of hundreds of US personnel in Exercise Alon in 2027.

China has criticized the move, stating that security cooperation between the US and Japan should not undermine regional peace or target third parties. Meanwhile, Japanese officials noted the agreement comes amid a challenging security environment, citing recent Chinese naval activity in the region.
