US-Japan missile production cooperation

Overview

The United States and Japan have agreed to establish a joint facility in Japan for the final assembly, testing, and inspection of AIM-120 AMRAAM advanced medium-range air-to-air missiles. Announced by Japanese Defense Minister Shinjiro Koizumi and US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth as part of the “Operation Supercharge” initiative, the facility is intended to bolster production capacity for both nations and strengthen Japan’s domestic defense industry.

The agreement follows broader discussions between the US, Japan, Australia, and the Philippines regarding expanded defense cooperation and military infrastructure. While the new facility focuses on final assembly and testing rather than full domestic manufacturing, it serves as a critical supply chain link. Additionally, the two nations have agreed to exchange technical information to increase the production of SM-3 Block IIA interceptor missiles.

China has criticized the move, stating that security cooperation between the US and Japan should not undermine regional peace or target third parties.
