United States and Mexico Conclude Final USMCA Review Talks
On June 19, delegations from the United States and Mexico completed a final round of talks ahead of the formal review of the United States‑Mexico‑Canada Agreement (USMCA) that begins on July 1. Mexican Economy Secretary Marcelo Ebrard met with U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer to present Mexico’s proposals and discuss rules of origin, economic security, agriculture and the automotive sector. The meeting was the second bilateral session following talks in Mexico City on May 28‑29.
The upcoming review will decide whether to extend the USMCA under its current terms through 2042 or move to annual reviews that could lead to its termination in 2036. Mexico and Canada have signaled readiness to renew the pact, while U.S. President Donald Trump remains ambiguous, stating he would prefer “not to have the USMCA” but is open to a renewal. The potential termination of the agreement, though considered unlikely, could have significant effects on certain U.S. states and product markets.
