United States and Paraguay sign security, energy, and investment agreements
During an official visit by U.S. Deputy Secretary of State Christopher Landau to Asunción, the United States and Paraguay formalized a series of strategic agreements spanning security, energy, and technology.
In the security sector, the U.S. announced the establishment of an International Narcotics and Law Enforcement (INL) office in Asunción, which will serve as a regional coordination hub for the Southern Cone. The U.S. will also deploy its first permanent counterterrorism advisor to the country. Financial commitments include USD 6.25 million to combat transnational organized crime and USD 5.5 million to strengthen counterterrorism efforts and border security. Additionally, the nations signed an aerial interception assistance agreement to monitor illegal drug flights.
Regarding energy and technology, Uranium Energy Corp (UEC) announced a USD 12 million investment to develop uranium concessions in Paraguay. The two countries have also entered negotiations for a “123 Agreement,” a legal framework allowing the export of civilian nuclear technology and materials from the U.S. to Paraguay.
Furthermore, a strategic partnership was formed between the U.S. firm Crusoe and the Paraguayan company Araico to build high-performance computing infrastructure powered by renewable energy from the Itaipú hydroelectric dam. This project aims to serve cloud service clients across the Americas.
