United States Announces New Forced‑Labor Tariffs on Indian Imports

The U.S. Trade Representative (USTR) announced additional tariffs of 10% to 12.5% on goods imported from India and 53 other economies, citing evidence that some products are made with forced labour. These tariffs will be added to existing duties. The move comes as India and the United States intensify negotiations to finalize a bilateral trade agreement, with talks described as positive and nearing completion. President Donald Trump praised Prime Minister Narendra Modi, calling him a good friend, and expressed confidence that a deal will be reached soon. The USTR list includes countries such as Australia, China, Japan, Saudi Arabia and the United Kingdom, all facing similar additional duties unless they demonstrate effective forced‑labour controls.
