United States asserts control over Strait of Hormuz amid Iran tensions

United States leadership has signaled a significant shift in control over the Strait of Hormuz, a critical global energy transit point. President Donald Trump stated that the United States substantially controls the strait and expects to achieve full control soon, asserting that Iran’s military capacity, specifically regarding missiles and drones, is limited.

Vice President JD Vance emphasized that economic pressure remains the most effective tool against Tehran, describing the situation as a “delicate dance” due to the potential for retaliatory economic measures. While acknowledging the impact of high oil prices at the pump, Vance maintained that the administration is capable of ensuring the continued transit of vessels through the strait.

The heightened tensions between the U.S. and Iran have already impacted global energy markets, with Brent crude rising 2.5% to $93.9 per barrel and WTI increasing 2.8% to $86.7 per barrel. U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent expressed uncertainty regarding the price surge but anticipated a rapid decline.
