Trump imposes tariffs on drones and components up to 100% FAST-MOVING
President Donald Trump has signed a proclamation imposing significant new tariffs on imported drones and components, citing national security concerns and a need to reduce reliance on foreign suppliers. The measure follows a Section 232 investigation by Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick, which concluded that foreign import penetration in the unmanned aircraft systems (UAS) market poses security risks.
The new tariff structure is tiered based on drone specifications and origin. A 100% ad valorem tariff will apply to drones with a maximum takeoff weight exceeding 25 kilograms, those equipped with thermal imaging capabilities, and their associated docking stations or critical components. Smaller drones without these specific capabilities will face a 25% tariff.
Preferential rates have been established for certain allies. Drones and components from the European Union, Japan, Liechtenstein, South Korea, Switzerland, and Taiwan will be subject to a 15% tariff, provided the hardware, software, and technology are substantially sourced from those regions or the US. Drones from the United Kingdom will face a 10% tariff under similar origin requirements.
Most tariffs are scheduled to take effect on September 3, 2026. However, a 180-day transition period will apply to components deemed less sensitive or those granted exemptions by the Pentagon.
