United States completes military mission in Iraq

The conclusion of the United States' Operation Inherent Resolve in Iraq on September 30, 2026, marks a significant shift in the country's security architecture. Following the withdrawal of forces and equipment from the Erbil air base, the Iraqi government has declared October 1 as the “Day of Sovereignty and Independence.”

While officials in Baghdad view the withdrawal as a step toward full national defense responsibility, the move has created regional concerns. The semi-autonomous Kurdistan Region of Iraq (KRI) faces increased apprehension regarding its security, having relied on U.S. protection for two decades. Analysts suggest the KRI faces potential erosion of its autonomy due to pressure from Baghdad and military threats from Iran.

Iran and various Tehran-backed militias have welcomed the withdrawal. Experts note that Tehran may seek to reduce the KRI to a purely administrative body with limited political influence. Despite the military exit, Baghdad intends to maintain bilateral cooperation with Washington through intelligence exchange, training, and capacity development.
