United States condemns China's maneuvers at Scarborough Shoal

The United States has condemned recent actions by China in the South China Sea, specifically regarding maneuvers near Scarborough Shoal. Washington accused Beijing of using the establishment of a “national nature reserve” as a “dubious pretext” to consolidate control over the disputed area and deny Filipino fishermen access to their traditional fishing grounds.

Following military and coast guard exercises conducted by China on August 1, Beijing issued new management policies for the “Huangyan Island National Nature Reserve,” which was established in September 2025. These regulations prohibit unauthorized fishing, mining, and coral extraction. The U.S. State Department characterized these moves as unilateral attempts to use environmental and legal arguments to advance territorial claims through coercion.

The dispute remains a central point of tension between China and the Philippines. Despite a 2016 ruling by the Permanent Court of Arbitration stating that China’s maritime claims have no legal basis under the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea, Beijing continues to assert sovereignty over the region, citing historical rights.
