US diesel export ban under consideration by Trump administration

The Trump administration is weighing a potential temporary ban on diesel exports to combat surging domestic fuel prices, which have risen approximately 85 cents per gallon in the last month. While the move aims to increase domestic supply and lower costs for American consumers, analysts warn of significant global repercussions.

Goldman Sachs estimates that a 90-day ban could reduce US diesel prices by about 4% per week but could drive wholesale costs in Europe up by approximately 20%. Such a restriction would impact major importers, including Brazil, which relies on the US for roughly 80% of its diesel imports.

Simultaneously, Russia is considering extending its own diesel export ban until the end of October to prioritize its domestic market following drone attacks on its refining infrastructure. The combination of potential US restrictions and existing Russian supply constraints is expected to tighten global diesel markets and increase inflationary pressures worldwide.
