United States cuts HIV/AIDS aid, jeopardizing clinics in low‑income countries

The United States has sharply reduced its overseas funding for HIV/AIDS programs, a change that took effect on 20 January 2025. The revision of the rules governing foreign assistance ended a period during which the U.S. share of global HIV/AIDS aid rose from 58 % in 2011 to 81 %.

The funding cut has caused immediate disruptions: clinics in poorer nations have been forced to close, medication supply chains have broken down, and research projects face reduced resources.
