United States energy storage capacity hits record 20.2 GWh in Q2

The United States energy storage industry achieved a record 20.2 gigawatt-hours (GWh) of new capacity in the second quarter of 2026. This brings total installations for the first half of the year to 30.8 GWh.

Utility-scale energy storage capacity has nearly doubled from 88 GWh to 165 GWh during the first 18 months of the current administration. This growth is driven by grid operators, utilities, and energy buyers seeking to strengthen grid reliability and meet rising electricity demand.

Due to this rapid deployment, the Solar Energy Industries Association (SEIA) and Benchmark Mineral Intelligence have increased their forecast for energy storage through 2030 by 11.5%, now projecting a total of 683 GWh.
